The "Mantinghausen burial mound" nature reserve is one of the most important archaeological sites in East Westphalia. It stretches over 700 meters long and 300 meters wide south of the old Roman road. During excavations carried out by the Westfalen State Museum of Prehistory and Early History in 1960/61, numerous burial urns were discovered which indicate that the site was used from around 1500 to 500 BC. These finds date from the Later Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The variety of burial types indicates continuous use as a burial ground over a period of around 1000 years. Some of the burial mounds are visible above ground, while invisible cremation burials have been found in the surrounding area. The area contains a total of 16 urn graves. This historical site offers valuable insights into the burial culture of past eras and is an important testimony to regional history.
