From time to time there are roadworks on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. We have compiled all known measures here so that you can inform yourself in advance. Detour are always set up and signposted on site. The detour are not included in the GPX track to avoid confusion caused by too many different GPX tracks in circulation.
In case of flooding of the Ruhr, you will find the corresponding flood bypasses here. Please note that the ruhrtalFähre Hardenstein can also stop operating at short notice during the off-season if the water level is too high. The daily updated ferry times can be found here: https://www.wabembh.de/
In addition to construction sites directly on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, there may also be closures or cancellations when traveling by train. You can find all the information we know about this HERE.
Please always check the following link before starting your journey to see if there are any replacement timetables, delays or changed connections:

From spring 2026, the Ruhr Valley cycle path will be extended in several stages. The progress and closures as well as information on how to get there will be regularly updated on the website.
1) Since 07.04.26 the expansion between Niedersfeld-"Im Stein" (station-7+530) and Haus Wildenstein (station 8+930) has started.
A detour has been set up and signposted via the B480 during the expansion work. (see map extract)
Expected construction period until the end of 2026.
2) From 04.05.26, the expansion will take place between Voßmecke (station 4+460) to the turntable access (station 2+758).
A detour has been set up and can be seen in the image below.
Expected construction period until the end of 2026.
3) From spring 2027, the expansion will begin between the access turntable (station 2+758) and the end of construction at the Winterberg traffic circle.
A detour will be in place during the expansion work via the existing cycle path and detour. A sketch of the detour can be seen below.
Attention: no access from the RTRW from the direction of "Ruhrquelle" possible during this construction work.
Expected construction period until the end of 2027.
From 16.02.2026 until probably 15.05.2026, the access road between Ruhr and Obergraben in Meschede-Freienohl will be closed due to construction work and the Ruhr Valley cycle path will be temporarily rerouted. The detour is signposted.
Due to a bridge construction project in Oeventrop, the RuhrtalRadweg is not passable throughout. Please use the temporary Kirchstraße bridge (dismount and push). Then use the Widayweg road (if necessary, dismount briefly here too).
Construction of the new pedestrian and cycle bridge in Wickede (Ruhr) has begun. The entire construction phase will last until 2027. The long construction period will be compensated for with a new wide bridge that will make it easy to cycle on.
Please watch out for construction traffic and do not cycle too fast around the construction site.
In Iserlohn, there may be short-term closures on the main route of the Ruhr Valley cycle path. An alternative route is signposted locally and shown on the map below for orientation.
In the long term, the RuhrtalRadweg will be relocated closer to the Ruhr and planning is already underway. The city of Iserlohn will start building the new alternative section of the route along the Ruhr from 20.04.2025 and, according to the schedule, it will be opened during the 2026 season
Until then, we ask all cyclists to ride slowly and carefully on the relevant section of the route and to show consideration for the animals and local residents so that the private operator can keep the route open on its property until the new section opens.
Thank you very much for your support!
Period of closure: 22.01.2026 - unknown
The wooden structure of the former railroad bridge needs to be repaired, PROSPECTIVELY by summer 2026. A problem-free detour of the cycle routes between KP51 (end of Grugatrasse) and Kupferdreh (KP54) - including the Ruhr Valley cycle path - is signposted via the Kampmannbrücke bridge not far to the north. At the next junction downstream, you will reach the routes again before Kupferdreh on the right down to the river bank.
Period of the closure run: 27.02.-18.04.2026
The surface on the Fossilienweg will be completely renewed. The detour between junctions 55 (Essen-Kettwig) and 3 (Ruhrbrücke Mülheim-Zentrum/MüGa; connection to Radschnellweg RS1) is signposted to the west parallel via the roadside cycle paths.
Due to construction work on the Karl Lehr Bridge in Duisburg-Kasslerfeld and on the Ruhr weir, the end of the Ruhr Valley cycle path will be closed for several years, both at the weir itself and under the bridge on Ruhrorter Straße. Unfortunately, the large-scale renovations are beyond our control and a cycle path must unfortunately be subordinate to such projects. As all possible bypasses were not optimal and attractive and do not meet the requirements of a 4* quality cycle path, the RuhrtalRadweg will be rerouted for the duration of the construction sites, which will last several years.
The new route now branches off at Emmericher Straße and leads via Duisburg-Duissern directly to the Buckelbrücke bridge in Duisburg's inner harbor, where you can end your tour in one of the numerous restaurants. The route has been specially signposted and even resurfaced in places. In addition, tourist information boards with overview maps have been installed and our GPX tracks have been adapted. This new, temporary finish point provides you with an attractive touristic end to your tour. For all those who would like to continue cycling to the Rhine Orange, there are also route suggestions from the inner harbor to the mouth of the Ruhr (can also be seen on the two signs on site):
