4 days between castles, mining, steel and iron
Along the Ruhr, often idyllic, rural and close to nature, you go on a discovery tour by bike through the Ruhr region. What makes this tour so extraordinary are the still recognizable traces of coal and steel and the imposing industrial monuments in contrast to the many idyllic and rural sections and nature reserves.
Day 1: Schwerte
Individual arrival in Schwerte and overnight stay. Spend your arrival day in the beautiful old town of Schwerte and discover sights such as the old town hall with the Ruhr Valley Museum.
Day 2: Schwerte - Witten (approx. 30 km)
From Schwerte you cycle along the Hengstey and Harkot lakes to Witten. A nice change of pace: a passenger boat trip is offered on Lake Harkort from Herdecke to Wetter, where you can also take your bike with you.
Day 3: Witten - Essen (approx. 60 km)
The next day starts with a mining highlight: in the Nachtigall colliery you will experience the roots of Ruhr mining and even enter a real coal seam. In Hattingen, not only the historic Altstadt is worth seeing, but also the former Henrichshütte.
Day 4: Essen - Duisburg (approx. 30 km)
Today is full of attractions. The Villa Hügel of industrial pioneer Alfred Krupp and the Baldeneysee, where you will still find many witnesses to the beginnings of Ruhr mining. In Werden, the St. Ludgerus Abbey and the beautiful Altstadt (Old Town) of the over 1200-year-old town are impressive. Between Kettwig and Duisburg, the RuhrtalRadweg leads through a lot of nature, as only a small part of the banks of the Ruhr are built on. A historic water tower with a water museum and the Schloss Broich and Styrum castles round off the day.
Day 5: Departure
Conclusion: What makes this tour so extraordinary are the still recognizable traces of coal and steel and the imposing industrial monuments in contrast to the many idyllic and rural sections and nature reserves.
