Current Route Information
From time to time, there are construction zones along the RuhrtalRadweg. We’ve compiled a list of all the construction projects we’re aware of here so you can stay informed in advance. Detours are always set up and clearly marked on-site. The detours are not included in the GPX track to avoid confusion caused by too many different GPX tracks circulating.
In the event of flooding along the Ruhr River, you’ll find the corresponding flood detours here. Please note that the Ruhr Valley Ferry at Hardenstein may suspend operations at short notice even during the off-season if water levels are too high. Renovation Between Winterberg and Olsberg
Starting in spring 2026, the RuhrtalRadweg will be expanded in several phases. Progress updates, road closures, and travel information will be regularly posted on the website. According to the responsible construction authority, the current detour via the heavily trafficked B480 is the only alternative route for cyclists. If you wish to avoid this busy federal highway, we recommend starting your bike trip in Olsberg during the construction period.
Since May 4, 2026, construction has been underway between Voßmecke (Station 4+460) and the Drehscheibe access road (Station 2+758).
- We recommend that you take the yellow route directly from the Winterberg train station via the roundabout and then follow the detour to Niedersfeld.
- If you’d like to visit the source of the Ruhr River on your tour, here’s an alternative route: The RuhrtalRadweg is currently open along its regular route from Winterberg Station via the source of the Ruhr River to the B480 (blue route). From there, the RuhrtalRadweg is closed all the way to Niedersfeld, so you’ll need to ride back along the B480 (green route) to the roundabout and then take the detour to Niedersfeld (yellow route).
- All routes are signposted according to the information available to us; please be especially mindful of motor vehicle traffic along the B480!

Construction is expected to last until the end of 2026.
Construction between Niedersfeld-“Im Stein” (Station 7+530) and Haus Wildenstein (Station 8+930) began on April 7, 2026.
A detour via the B480 has been set up and is signposted during the construction work (see map excerpt). Please be especially careful of motor vehicle traffic along the B480!
Construction is expected to last until the end of 2026.
Starting in spring 2027, construction will begin between the Drehscheibe access road (Station 2+758) and the Winterberg roundabout, where it will continue until completion.
During construction, traffic will be rerouted via the existing bike path and detour.
Please note: During these construction activities, access from the RTRW in the direction of “Ruhrquelle” will not be possible.
Construction is expected to last until the end of 2027.
Bestwig
Due to construction work, the RuhrtalRadweg between Nuttlar and Ostwig is closed in the area of the Nuttlar Halden. The closure begins on Monday, June 29, and is expected to last about two months. During this time, cyclists will be rerouted via Schildstraße in Ostwig. Alternatively, cyclists can use the bike path along the L743 through Nuttlar. The municipality of Bestwig asks all road users for their understanding.
Arnsberg-Neheim
The RuhrtalRadweg is closed starting at the bridge on Kurt-Schuhmacher Street, just before City Hall. The detour runs along Kurt-Schuhmacher Street and Bahnhofstraße, rejoining the RuhrtalRadweg before City Hall Square.
The closure will last until October 2026. The reason is the reconstruction of Rathausplatz. The bike path will follow a new route in this area and will be integrated into the town hall’s surroundings, featuring amenities and seating areas.
Wickede
Construction of the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Wickede (Ruhr) has begun. The entire construction phase will last until 2027. The long construction period will be offset by a new, wide bridge that will allow for easy cycling.
Please be mindful of construction traffic and do not ride too fast in the area around the construction site.
Hagen
Due to the new expansion of the lakeside paths for cyclists and pedestrians, various sections along Hengsteysee in Hagen must be closed and rerouted.
Weather
During the second phase of construction, beginning October 21, 2026, and lasting approximately 6 months, the existing path on Strandweg will be renovated using asphalt and widened in some sections. In addition, a separate pedestrian path will be built over a distance of about 120 meters.
The detour route runs from the Herdecke Ruhr Bridge through Hagen-Vorhalle. The mini-golf course as well as the shops and restaurants in Herdecke remain accessible via the RuhrtalRadweg. Before the closure at the canoe club in Wetter, it is also possible to reach Freiheit and Wetter’s downtown via a staircase with a bike-pushing aid; however, this route is steep and not accessible to people with disabilities.
The closure at “Am Obergraben” (first construction phase) has since been lifted.
Witten
The detour route for the Hardenstein Ruhr Valley Ferry—which can be used outside of ferry operating hours as an alternative to the regular route of the RuhrtalRadweg—is closed on the Nachtigall Bridge for an extended period. A detour is currently being set up, and we will inform you as soon as possible about a recommended detour route when the ferry is not operating.
